AN INSTRUMENTED BORED PILE WITH SOIL IMPROVEMENT FOR INCREASED SHAFT RESISTANCE. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985
In a limestone area in Malaysia, the limestone occurs in the form of thin slabs with soil in between. Loose alluvium overlies the limestone slabs. Large diameter bored piles were constrained to be founded on the thin slabs. The limestone slabs in combination with the poor overburden soil were considered inadequate to support the piles. The soil in the overburden shaft zone was then improved by jet grouting technique which is briefly described. The pile was then instrumented and load tested to determine the load transfer pattern as well as its general behaviour. In another part of the site one large diameter bored pile with no improvement of shaft resistance was load tested, and the results were analyzed and compared with the behaviour of the pile with shaft zone soil improvement. A cluster of jet grout columns was also constructed in the overburden material and load tested. A finite element model study was also made to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved.
