DETERMINATION OF THE INITIAL SOIL STRESS STATE. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985

The determination of the initial state of stress of a soil mass is of major importance, because its reliability governs the forecasting of stress and strain redistribution due to external effects. Several methods are presented, tested in Sofia and Moscow, for the determination of the initial state of stress of the soil mass by using: (a) soil dynamometers and bore-holes, (b) soil dynamometers and trenches, (c) three-stage dynamometers, (d) a laboratory method. The results are presented. Equations are given for calculating the full tensor of stresses in the soil mass in semi-infinite space and in natural and artificial slopes. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (TRRL)
