BEHAVIOR AND SIMULATION OF SANDY GROUND TUNNEL. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985
To investigate the mechanical behavior of a shallow sandy ground tunnel and to establish the design method for a thin flexible shotcrete lining, two kinds of laboratory model tests and two types of finite element analyses were performed. It was found that a larger loosening zone developed when the overburden became smaller and a flexible thin lining had a remarkable tunnel supporting capability. The use of joint elements in the analyses is effective to describe the discontinuous movements that occurred in sandy ground due to tunneling. A design method of thin flexible lining as shotcrete is also presented. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (Author/TRRL)
