A REVIEW OF HIGHWAY DESIGN PRACTICES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

This publication is a review of the design standards of approximately 150 highway projects financed by the World Bank between 1960 and 1970. The activities of international associations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses, the International Road Federation and the Pan American Highway Congresses, international engineering consultants, international lending organizations, and agencies for bilateral and multilateral economic aid were all found to significantly influence engineering thought and practice which is expressed in the national road standards of the 63 countries studied. Data are presented on the following: standards for the capacity-related elements of design, standards for the velocity-related elements of design, radius of curvature versus design speed, stopping sight distance, passing sight distance, horizontal and vertical clearances for bridges, standard live loadings for bridges, the structural capacity of pavements, legal load limits, pavement design, suggested design standards for two-lane highways, incremental development of highway, and levels of service.
