ECONOCRETE: REPORT NO.1

Econocrete is portland cement concrete designed for a specific application and environment. It makes use of locally available aggregates, which do not necessarily meet conventional quality standards for aggregates used in pavements. The primary objective of the econocrete concept is to provide a more economical pavement structure through judicious use of materials designed for specific applications and environments. This report reviews the history of econocrete and discusses its uses in composite pavements, subbases, concrete shoulders, and street paving. The results of several laboratory test programs and field applications are presented. A design nomograph for a composite pavement prepared by T. J. Larsen of the Florida Department of Transportation is presented. This nomograph allows composite pavement thickness determinations for all classes of concrete. The use of such a nomograph permits the materials and design engineers to jointly determine the most economical pavement structure for the local materials available. A discussion is included of FHWA Notice N5080.34', "Subject: Pavement, Subbase, and Shoulder Designs Using Econocrete and the Initiation of NEEP Project No. 20-Experimental Pavement Construction Using Econocrete." In conclusion, recommendations are made for obtaining the highest quality construction using econocrete.
