ELASTIC STABILITY OF DECK-TYPE ARCH BRIDGES

The current AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges require the live load plus impact stresses be amplified by a factor which depends on the in-plane buckling load. For computing that buckling load, the specifications presume that the arch ribs would act independently of the deck. The paper presents data to show that the buckling loads can be markedly affected by the presence of the deck. The effects depend on such parameters as the type of column connections and the bracing systems between the ribs and the deck, as well as the stiffness and support conditions of the latter. The three-dimensional elastic stability including lateral and torsional buckling is also studied. It is suggested that in the computing of the buckling loads of these bridges, instead of treating the ribs as independent entities, the entire bridge system be considered.
