AN ACCELERATED BRIDGE PROGRAM IS NEEDED NOW. ARTBA'S WASHINGTON REPORT
The U.S. Department of Transportation' annual report on the state of the federal Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program is discussed, and it is noted that America's bridges are deteriorating at a faster pace than they are being improved. Immediate action is urged to revitalize the bridge improvement program. Ways in which this could be done in a fiscally painless manner are noted. It is also noted that DOT's present plans will only maintain the status quo. This must be changed so that unsafe bridges and their threat of human tragedy could be eliminated. State and local governments can help by being innovative and utilizing new technologies to stretch their limited resources. Others in the transportation and construction industry must also speak out in favor of funding the bridge improvement program at the highest possible level.
