IDENTIFYING RESEARCH PAYOFFS. A TASK FORCE HISTORY

In 1982, a Task Force was apppointed at the Transportation Research Board to demonstrate and publicize the value of research. The Task Force's mission was to link research findings and the benefits derived therefrom in terms of dollars saved, improved safety, efficiency, and productivity. The medium chosen to publicize research payoffs was the bimonthly TR News. Submissions for publication have come from various sources including highway agencies, federal agencies, consultants and others. The topics covered have included hard-side as well as soft-side subjects. The actual subject areas covered are listed in a table. The selection of topics for TR News articles from among those submitted for consideration is described. To date, a total of 24 articles have been published in the series which has been predominantly highway related. Feature articles have appeared on bridge fatigue, earthquake protection, and broad research program benefits. Early Research Pays Off articles have been compiled into a booklet. The Task Force will continue its role and will search for projects to develop and report for publication.
