RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENTS: HIGHWAY CAPACITY

Twenty nine statements are presented here, grouped in the following areas: freeways; rural highways; signalized intersections; unsignalized intersections; arterials; and pedestrians/bicycles. The following have been identified as the top ten research needs: capacity of ramp-freeway junctions; validation of procedures for calculating signalized intersection delay levels of service and capacity of weaving areas; shared/permissive lanes at singnalized intersections; adjustment factors for saturation flow rates at signalized intersections; capacity analysis methods for cross-street stop and yield controlled intersections; LOS criteria for signalized intersections at near-capacity conditions; evaluation of the relationship between levels of service computed for unsignalized intersections and traffic signal warrants; freewqy capacity trends; benefits of operational improvements along two-lane rural highways.
