ON THE REDUCTION OF SLAMMING PRESSURES
A revised and improved theory of flat water impact is presented which takes account of the air trapped between the falling body and the water surface. Two sets of experiments are described. In the first set, pressure measurements on a flat plate were made on a large vertical drop test machine. It was shown that end flanges would sharply reduce the peak pressures because they entrapped a greater volume of air. The second set of experiments were on a small scale "Mariner" model in head seas. These showed that the slamming pressures under the forefoot could be sharply reduced if the air cushion was artificially reinforced.
