"MANAGEMENT OF ROAD EQUIPMENT" EXPLORED IN IRF SYMPOSIUM IN LAS VEGAS

The eleven papers presented at the symposium are briefly summarized. The paper "Economic Benefits of Equipment Management," described the World Bank's Equipment Management Improvement Planning. This includes a comprehensive inventory and evaluation of existing equipment, examination of the supply system, assessing adequacy of workshop, tools, etc., human resource requirements, and the subsequent development of an action plan. The paper, "Optimum Workshop Staffing Levels: Matching Users and Resources," described Louisiana's system to determine the best staffing for mechanics and welders. "Financing Options" addressed the topic in regard to acquiring construction equipment. "Effective Deployment of Equipment" discussed the Ohio Transportation Department's equipment fleet experiences. The paper on "Information Management Systems" pointed out some of the complex management, operations, inventory, and financial decisions that have to be made in highway operations. Other papers discussed here are as follows: Training of Equipment Operators; Personnel Training; Efficient Repair Shop Operation; Inventory Management Systems; and Preventive Maintenance Systems.
