ROADS, BRIDGES & COMPUTERS. COMPUTERS EASE ACCOUNTING CHORES
The article describes financial software that is available for engineers, contractors and public agencies. The choices available include the Computer Based Financial Management System (CFMS) which has the largest number of any program intended exclusively for engineers and architects. Modules may be purchased separately. Other leaders in financial management are noted. The costs of modules, etc. are discussed. Computer software for contractors must include capabilities such as purchasing, inventory and maintenance. The strength of the system will also be determined by its ability to customize the program to the needs of the user. For counties, the program with the highest share of market is the County Highway Resource Information System (C.H.R.I.S.). It provides 6 modules all written especially for county needs: general ledger, fixed asset accounting, job costing, payroll, equipment management, and equipment inventory. The software is flexible enough so it can be adapted to meet the needs of counties in different states.
