ATA CAMPAIGN TARGETS LOOPHOLES THAT PERMIT UNSAFE TRUCKS IN URBAN ZONES
This article focuses on closing the loopholes that currently permit trucks to operate in large urban areas without meeting federal safety regulations. Many truck accidents are the result of defective, uninspected vehicles and unqualified drivers operating in commercial zones - legally defined urban regions that encompass the principal cities and most surrounding suburbs. The establishment has also been announced of the a two-car Truck Safety Patrol to cruise the Capital Beltway on the lookout for unsafe acts by trucks. A pamphlet, "How to Drive on the Washington Beltway" which gives tips from professional truck drivers identifies "hot spots," and a similar "How to Drive Chicago's Expressways-Advice from Professional Truck Drivers" are noted. Further comments are made on the commercial zone issue, and a call is made for revision of certain sections of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to extend safety rules into commercial zones.
