ONTARIO-UNITED STATES BORDER TRUCK MOVEMENTS

The movement of goods via the commercial vehicle (truck) mode at border crossings between the Province of Ontario and the United States is documented in this article. Annual and monthly truck movement trends at border crossings, changes in the preferred points of entry over time, and a brief review of the relative competitiveness of other transborder modes are discussed. The study methodology is described. Truck movement by country of origin, monthly and seasonal variation, border crossing movements, in-transit movements, and border truck characteristics are covered. Forecasts of future border crossing movements are also discussed. Rail, air and marine operations are considered, as well as the increased use of commercial trucks. The study found that international truck movements at the crossings are steadily increasing and reflect an improving economy and a shifting in modal shares. The rate of growth experienced at these crossings exceeded those found for most economic indicators over the same time period.
