THE SAFE TRANSPORTATION OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
The background to the issue of hazardous materials transportation is briefly reviewed, and the five basic components of safe transportation of such materials is discussed. The integrity of the container holding the material is the first most basic component of safe transportation. The design and construction of such containers, and regulations and research in this area is noted. The second component of safety is the training of the personnel involved. Legislation in this area is noted. The routing of hazardous materials truck shipments is the third component of safety. The proper maintenance of these routes is also discussed. The final component of safe transportation of hazardous materials is the preparation of an effective emergency response to an accident.
