ROADSIDE INSPECTION: A NEEDED UPGRADE

The Department of Transportation's Motor Carrier Safety Program (MCSAP) is described. The MCSAP is designed to reduce the number and severity of accidents and hazardous materials incidents involving commercial motor vehicles. The program will substantially increase roadside inspections and the likelihood that safety defects, driver deficiencies, and unsafe carrier practice will be detected and corrected. Details of the roadside inspection are briefly described, and the program's growth is noted. The First Annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Program Conference sponsored by the MCSAP is noted.
