AN INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION AWARD PROGRAM FOR BUS OPERATORS
A successful Individual Recognition Award Program which was instituted at the Milwaukee County Transit System is described. The program, which was designed to encourage all bus operators to improve their attendance and to provide a "pat on the back" for operators with outstanding records, has been successful in reducing absenteeism and boosting operator morale. The program attempted to improve the attendance of the 45%-50% of the operators who were absent between 2 and 15 days per year. Details of the program are summarized. To keep operator interest high, the awards were given 3 times a year. To motivate the largest number of operators, a 2-tiered award system was established. To make the program as equitable as possible, a "no fault" type of absence policy is used. The program results are described, and a cost/benefit analysis is given.
