SOME TECHNIQUES TO OBTAIN ADHESION FOR NEOPRENE COATINGS USED IN SEA WATER

Data presented in this report is taken from a coatings program for the development of coatings for hydrofoils. This program included investigations of surface preparations, primers, adhesives, and coatings. Thirty mil or greater thicknesses of neoprene, polyurethane, vinyl and phenolic modified rubber elastomerics and 15 mil thicknesses of eight other systems were evaluated. Liquid neoprene coating and a neoprene rubber stock were further developed to provide systems that will resist all damaging effects including the combined effects of impingement-erosion and cavitation-erosion. For large areas composite wash primer, epoxy-chlorinated rubber tie coat primer and two neoprene elastomer top coat system has shown outstanding adhesion and no damage in cavitation and impingement tests.
