COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF PRECAST CONCRETE PIPE-ARCH AND ARCH STRUCTURES

In this paper is presented a comparative evaluation of precast concrete pipe-arch and arch structures constructed in Minnesota during the past 20 years. Typical geometrics of these two types of structures are given. Design differences, structural details, load configurations, bedding materials, and foundation considerations for each type of structure are discussed. Comparative evaluation of features and problems associated with construction, maintenance, and repair of these structures is presented. Available information on initial and estimated life-cycle cost is covered in view of known performance history. Conclusions and recommendations are made for improvement in the design and construction of these two types of structures.
