UPWARD MOVEMENT OF BOULDERS DUE TO FROST HEAVE

Under certain conditions frost heave pushes boulders upwards through the road structure. On paved roads this is manifested by bulges in the surfacing, and remedial action is expensive. Tests on a number of methods have shown: (1) the location of boulders by georadar is not reliable; (2) extraction of single boulders up to 2 cu m in size costs 1000-2000 sek each excluding reinstatement of surfacing; (3) placing of insulation above boulder in an existing road is a simple and economic alternative for boulders larger than 2 cu m (it is not certain that this method is effective); (4) removal of boulders during construction is an easy and cheap way of avoiding trouble - clearance of 50 m of a 6.5 m wide road during construction costs the same as removal of one boulder from an existing road; (5) clearance of the entire section of existing road can be done for 400 sek/m on a 6.5 m wide road; (6) insulation of an entire section of existing road with slag is an alternative to the use of styrofoam for hauls less than 50 km; (7) insulation of existing roads using expanded plastics is expensive but effective; and (8) deep drainage of an entire section along both sides costs twice as much as boulder clearance. Further tests of the effect of these methods will be made. (TRRL)
