ACTIVITIES, ATTITUDES AND TRIP-MAKING IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS

This report describes a series of home-based surveys that was undertaken in eight residential areas in different parts of South Africa. The broad aim of the study was to gain factual information on traffic movement in residential areas, as well as residents' attitudes towards road-related qualities of the environment, in order to derive appropriate standards for the layout and geometric and structural design of residential roads. The report details the objectives of the investigation, describes the study methodology and survey areas and highlights the most important results. It concludes with a summary of the findings which are most significant for design purposes. (Author/TRRL)
