PREVENTION OF TANKER CORROSION WITH MODERN COATINGS. MOBIL CHEMICAL COMPANY
Considerations related to coating problems encountered in corrosion prevention of tanker fleet with discussion of some special topics of overall interest as well as future trends of industry which will affect coatings. Problem areas on ships are--bottom, boottopping, decks, and tanks. Three basic variables to be controlled include--surface preparation, application methods, and coating selection. Economic evaluations and experiences gained with painting and coating maintenance on several tankers. Use of shop primers and temporary protectives of flat plates and its advantages. Marine trends presented in following aspects--reduced fuel consumption/speed loss, longer docking intervals, automated ship operation, trend to larger sizes, automated blasting and coating, chemical carriers, and combination bulk carriers.
