SOME FACTORS INFLUENCING TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

The accident pattern between 1974 and 1981 is discussed and some explanatory factors examined. Factors affecting the long term trend are the number of vehicles, the level of economic activity, the rural speed limit and the period since a change in the speed limit. Public holidays and the week of the month affect the week-to-week variations. The influence of individual factors on the number of accidents is discussed, and it is recommended that the rural speed limit be reduced to 90 km/h. (TRRL)
