METHODS OF ASSESSMENT FOR STRUCTURAL DETERIORATION OF PAVEMENTS

The primary indicator of the strength of flexible pavements is the deflection measured under a rolling wheel load. Much additional information is required to identify the main factors contributing to the deterioration of these pavements and thus to explain their performance. A thorough structural examination is essential to establish the need for substantial strengthening measures and for the detailed design involved, particularly when major expenditure is being considered. The presentation will indicate the information that needs to be collected in making a detailed structural examination and will recommend a method of conducting the investigation of the present condition of subgrade and pavement layers. A graphical format is proposed to summarize the condition and an approach suggested for explaining the performance of the pavement. This paper is presented in an abstract form.
