LASER LEVELLING TAKES MOTORWAY SURVEYING INTO THE FAST LANE

A description is given of an alternative to cordoning off stretches of motorway for survey work in advance of maintenance contracts for which there has been an increasing need in recent years. The new method of levelling, developed by LKB International, is carried out remotely from the verge or hard shoulder. Two high precision electronic theodolites fitted with data recorders are used with a laser to define the point of measurement. There is no limit on the number of levels that can be taken and readings are computed quickly and accurately. Extensive testing has been carried out and a trial involving observers from Kent, Berkshire and Surrey County Councils is described. The expense of the equipment and the need for three night workers means the cost of the survey work is above that of the conventional method, but the costs of coning and signing can be offset against these expenses.
