COAL TAR EPOXY COATINGS "THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC"
Coal tar epoxies are effective high performance coatings, especially where corrosion protection is paramount and where aesthetics are of secondary importance. Engineers expect 25 to 30 years of protection, based on their experience with coal tar epoxies in many severe services. Their proven, long-term performance record presents a very attractive investment choice, based on cost/ml square foot/year of service. Significant public specifications for coal tar epoxy coatings are summarized in this article. Most coal tar epoxy formulations are categorized as either amine or polyamide cured, and their properties are compared. Criteria for judging the quality of coal tar epoxy coatings are listed. Common misunderstandings and misconceptions about coal tar epoxies are also discussed.
