ASPHALT RECYCLING INNOVATIONS: WARM MIX LEADS THE WAY
A recently developed warm mix method is described which uses a Wirtgen cold milling machine and a Marini asphalt recycle travel plant. These create a new base material at 170 degrees F. The job mix formula varies put the process is the same as the not-in-place process except that it uses a lighter weight standard asphalt such as AC-5 to rejuvenate the old asphalt and coat any needed new gradation stone. Paving with warm mix is described. Major developments are expected in the form of in-place hot-mix recycling. They will center on increases in the percentage of recycle material that can be used in non-experimental mixes of high quality. Designs available to elevate the heat of recycle material are described. Cold-mix developments are discussed. It is also described how in Europe, contractors are mixing portland cement into milled material, adding water, and then roller compacting the result.
