GASOHOL MANDATE WOULD GUT HIGHWAY TRUST FUND

Under a proposed law to require increased use of gasohol, states would have received a third less in federal highway funds, since gasohol and other alternative fuels are currently tax exempt. They would have lost $3.5 billion this year and more than $4 billion in 1992. Even under current law, the Highway Trust Fund loses $500 million a year because of the exemption. The author opposes the exemption on grounds that the extra revenue is needed to provide the additional capacity needed to handle a projected 50% increase in travel over the next 12 years.
