PRE-PLANNING PAYS

An account is given of the camp hill junction scheme which forms part of birmingham's middle ring road. The greatest challenge has been sorting out problems along the route before construction could begin. This has included diverting part of the grand union canal, the exhumation and clearance of a churchyard, the building of new railway bridges and a new duct to the telephone exchange. The scheme involves constructing a large roundabout at the camp hill/stratford road junction and dualling existing single carriageways. The route aims to relieve pressure on the city's inner ring road and syphon off through traffic. It is also seen as an incentive to the regeneration of decaying urban areas along its route and developments are already taking place. Another project the coventry road junction contract, will be taking place at the same time in this area. Details are given of the steps taken to ensure that diversions are phased to minimise delays and these include a large public information campaign. (TRRL)
