THE DRAINAGE CAPACITY OF BS ROAD GULLIES AND A PROCEDURE FOR ESTIMATING THEIR SPACING
The 1976 revision of the British standard on the manufacture of gully gratings (BS497) allowed new grating designs to be used in the UK for road drainage. This report presents the results of hydraulic tests on 4 typical examples of the new grating designs performed at oxford polytechnic, as well as the results of similar tests on 6 gratings and 1 kerb inlet of earlier design already published by the transport and Road Research Laboratory. The results of all tests have been used in a design procedure, which allows the drainage engineer to estimate the spacing required for each type of grating on a kerbed road with crossfall, which will give a selected standard of drainage. The required standard is specified by the engineer in terms of a maximum design flood width at the kerb and its average frequency of occurrence. The test results and spacing procedure do not apply to long lengths of horizontal road or roads at gradients less than 1 in 300. In such cases the design method by whiffin and young in report lr 602, should be used. Further work is recommended on the development of a semi-theoretical approach to grating design, which will make hydraulic testing of individual designs unnecessary. (TRRL)
