CYCLIST INFORMATION IN URBAN AREAS

CYKELINFORMATION I TAETORT

The technical standards of bicycle networks throughout Sweden have gradually been improved. This has given rise to requirements for improved information to cyclists and other road users, about cycling as a part of the traffic system. There are very few guidelines on cycle information design, or to whom it is to be addressed. The problems to be solved are: road signs for cyclists are too sparsely installed, deficient signing along the street network, signs unsuitably located, lack of destination and distance signs and inadequate maintenance of signs. According to the interviews carried out in the city of malmoe and the town of luleaa (Sweden), the majority of cyclists miss, and would appreciate, improvements to road signing for cyclists, while not more than a tenth are indifferent to signing. Nearly half the cyclists in malmoe and a good third of the cyclists in luleaa use cycle maps, while nearly a fifth do not know where to find a map. The results also indicate that the way of presenting information is of great importance to the response from cyclists. The knowledge of the significance of bicycle signs seems to be greater among people with a driving licence. To introduce new measures, a better solid basis for estimations is required, which gives an opportunity for further research on the subject. (TRRL)
