HOW ARE CYCLISTS PASSED BY DRIVERS ON A TWO-LANE ROAD
KUINKA PYORAILIJA OHITETAAN
The riding behaviour of 120 cyclists was videotaped for a distance of 250 m on a two-lane road, with the lanes of 3.2 m and the paved shoulders of 1.2 m in width. This was made along a straight stretch of road, with cars passing them, and with the observer and equipment hidden in line of this stretch of road at about 20 m above the road level. This arrangement made it possible to measure, from the videotapes, the lateral position of the cyclist and the cars at the passing instant at two-second steps before and after. When approaching a cyclist drivers started steering left about 6 s before the passing. The average displacement at the passing instant was 46 cm, and about 4 s later the drivers were back in their original driving line. The mean safety margin between the passing cars and the cyclist was 1.44 m. There was no change in the cyclists' lateral position when passed by cars, except in the situation with an oncoming vehicle. (TRRL)
