COMPARISON OF POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS FROM PETROL AND DIESEL ENGINES
USPOREDBA EMISIJA POLICIKLICKIH AROMATSKIH UGLJIKOVODIKA IZ BENZINSKIH I DIZEL MOTORA VOZILA
The article determines the emission of nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pah) from a zastava 101 car and eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from a tam 75c3f van. The polycyclic hydrocarbons from the zastava 101 exhaust fumes are the following: benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, fluoranthene, pyrene, indeno(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(k)anthracene and coronene. In the van exhaust fumes no coronene was found. The analytical method used is based on the extraction of compounds from filters with benzene, separation by two-dimensional thin layer chromatography and on quantitative determination by selective fluorescence spectrometry. The results obtained show that in emissions fluorathene is the dominant pah. In relation to air pollution measurements this indicates that traffic is the main source of fluorathene in the atmosphere. It has been established that the emission of all polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the zastava 101 was twice as large as the emission of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the tam 75c3f van. The emission of the carcinogenic benzo(a)pyrene from the zastava 101 petrol engine is considerably higher than the emission from the tam 75c3f van with diesel engine and therefore is more hazardous to health.
