REINFORCEMENT CORROSION AND PROTECTION OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE STRUCTURES

KOROZIJA I ZASTITA ARMATURE U KONSTRUKCIJAMA OD LAKIH BETONA

Extensive investigations revealed that many properties of leightweight reinforced concrete structures are not inferior to properties of high-density concrete structures. The durability of structures, however, depends considerably on the concrete ability to protect steel reinforcement for a long time. If porous aggregates used in lightweight concrete react during thermal treatment with calcium hydroxide (e.g. Some types of slag and ashes), the ph-value decreases resulting in the development of reinforcement corrosion. In such case steel protection can be achieved by (1) proportioning of concrete with due regard for the hydraulic activity of the aggregate; (2) ensuring the adequate density of concrete so as to retard the carbonation; (3) introducing steel corrosion inhibitors into the concrete; and (4) applying metallic or polymer coatings on steel reinforcement surfaces.
