ELECTRONIC TAB ON TRUCKS
An electronic licence plate is being tested in the United States. Every heavy lorry in the trial is fitted with an electronic licence plate; when the lorry passes over an induction loop buried in the road, the loop reads a code on the electronic licence plate. This code identifies the lorry and the information is fed back by radio to regional and state computers. The electronic licence plates enable police forces to detect and locate stolen lorries. The plate also weighs the axles of lorries as they pass over the buried loops. A similar system was tested in Hong Kong to cut traffic in the city centre. The most likely system to be adopted for the electronic licence plate is a piezometric load sensor, made from copper-sheathed coaxial cables. (TRRL)
