ICE COOL CASTING IN KUWAIT

In building the Jahra Gazali motorway viaduct in Kuwait, large elevated prestressed box sections 26m wide and weighing 135 tons each are being constructed. The work advances at a rate of 7.5m/day and is being carried out in temperatures of up to 50 deg C. A large part of the contract has involved locating and rerouting electricity, gas, sewerage and telephone installations only installed a few years ago. Details are given of the techniques involved which include blasting air through the aggregate to cool it and the addition of water in the form of ice to keep the temperature of the concrete below 32 deg C. Precasting is done under cover and an average of three segments a day is produced. After curing the units are moved into place by a purpose-built multi-wheel vehicle and positioned. Brief details are given of prestressing, movement joints and street lighting. (TRRL)
