SWITCHING ON TO THE RIGHT NETWORK

Public transport plays an important part in the life of Edinburgh and has done so whilst other cities have seen it decline. The reasons for this probably include a compact urban area, high density development, high frequency bus services, traffic management favouring bus operation, limited new road construction, low fares and restricted parking. Lothian Regional Council has decided to undertake a detailed two year study to prepare a long term development strategy for public transport in the Edinburgh conurbation. An account is given of the study which will include pamphlets and a detailed questionnaire sent to households, home interview, passenger interview during journeys and contacts with local amenity groups and community councils. The data from journey interview cards and ticket machine data is to be analyzed using the Halcrow Fox Tranplan suite of programs. Various schemes will then be developed and subjected to further public scrutiny and economic and operational assessment. (TRRL)
