GOOD SURFACE PREPARATION - THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE CONCRETE REPAIRS

A description is given of high pressure water jetting and its uses. Traditional methods for removing damaged concrete have disadvantages where steel reinforcements exist and where the work is overhead. High pressure water jetting is still being developed but has proved cost effective and efficient. Details are given of the techniques used which involve a combination of pressure and volume depending on the individual situation and usually the experience of the operator. Equipment, water volumes and clothing are also discussed. The use of the technique during repairs to the underside of the Tyne tunnel roadway, in building a diaphragm wall for the Stevenston outfall works (Strathclyde) and for resurfacing work in sewage treatment plants is also described. Rates of cutting various materials by means of "jetnife", a water/abrasive mixture are given. (TRRL)
