BARNACLE CEMENT

General considerations related to fouling problems. Factors affecting fouling and design of First Generation Antifouling coatings that can repel fouling for periods of two to three years. Study of the attachment mechanism of the sessile barnacle, a major fouling organism. The determination of the chemical composition of the barnacle cement and of the chemical reaction of its hardening. Autoradiographic and instrumental analysis of barnacle cement as well as study of its hardening mechanism enabled new approaches to fouling problems and introduction of new formulations, second generation antifouling coatings. These coatings have 10-yr normal service life. Examples of paint formulation are given.
