TECHNICAL NOTE NO. 4. DESCRIPTION OF A VIDEO DISC SYSTEM FOR HIGHWAY VIDEO LOGGING: A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE

The relative merits of photo-logging and video-logging are discussed. A techinque has been demonstrated by which the film camera has been replaced by a video camera fitted with a high speed shutter and video disc record/replay system. Preliminary tests with this system are described. It was found that capital costs for the hardware necessary to produce photo-logs and video-logs are similar, but ease of access to results and cost of consumables is in favor of the video method. With video-log, the progress of a survey can be checked at any time during the task, and doubtful sections of highway recorded if necessary. Information obtained from the video-log may be edited, collated, and duplicated for dissemination by normal video handling tehcniques. It is noted that video-logging is a cost-effective alternative to the traditional photographic logging method.
