DESIGN DESCRIPTION OF MELTING-CONSOLIDATING PROTOTYPE SUBTERRENE PENETRATORS
Design details of prototype, refractory metal, melting- consolidating penetrators are given. These rock-melting penetrators form a glass lining on the hole and thus obviate the need for debris removal. In field tests, vertical holes up to 25 m (85 ft) deep and a horizontal hole 16 m long have been completed successfully in tuff. Glass-lined holes have been made in various samples of soils, shales, and wet and dry alluvium. This type of penetrator has been included in the recently completed portable, modularized field demonstration unit. /AUTHOR/
