FREE VIBRATION BEHAVIOR OF TAPERED BEAM COLUMNS

Recently the writers have studied the free vibration behavior of uniform beams prestressed with an end-concentrated axial load using the Rayleigh-Ritz method (Raju and Rao 1986). Results were presented for higher modes of vibration. However, for economic and efficient use of material, tapered beams are frequently used in civil engineering construction. Information similar to that presented by Raju and Rao (1986) is not readily available (to the best of the writers' knowledge) in literature for tapered beams in the presence of an axial load. In continuation of Raju and Rao (1986) in this note, the free vibration behavior of beam columns has been evaluated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method, considering the effects of taper, shear deformation, and rotatory inertia. A set of numerical results, which will be readily useful to designers, is presented, with a brief description of the formulation.
