BRITISH LR PROJECTS SEEK PRIVATE FUNDS
The British government will only make a contribution to the capital cost of building new systems provided there is some private-sector involvement. The first phase of Manchester's light rail project is being used as a guinea pig to see if it is possible to inject private capital into LRT schemes. Similar projects are in Sheffield and the West Midlands. The promoters of a light rail scheme in Bristol are going one step further as no public funds are being sought at all.
