TOOLING AROUND: WHEN YOU WISH UPON A (RAIL) CAR
Walt Disney World (Florida) let a $10mil order to Advanced Technology and Research (Clearwater, Florida) to produce from composites a lighter and larger monorail car that will sit on a Bombardier (Canada) produced chassis. The new monorail, replacing 1 inaugurated in 1971 that has carried 1 billion plus people over 850,000 plus mi, is seen serving as a model for several municipal systems. ATR is producing the carbon fiber composite cars in a 1-piece design from a Nomex honeycomb layered with other composite materials. The material is kept in a refrigerated room so the epoxy won't harden. The composite cars will carry 30 percent more people vs the former design, but will weigh 5 percent less.
