SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT: THE MERCHANT MARINE AND NATIONAL DEFENSE
This article describes the organization of the Military Sealift Command (MSC), and how it is integral to the national security of the United States. MSC has 3 missions: strategic sealift, direct fleet support, and special mission support. Foremost among these is that of strategic sealift: capacity to deploy and to sustain military forces whenever and whereever needed as rapidly and for as long as operational requirements dictate. The way in which MSC fulfills this mission in peacetime is described. MSC operates a force of 214 ships in addition to the cargo it places on liner agreement ships. The problems posed by the containerization of cargo is noted. It is hoped that new technology can resolve many maritime industry problems.
