RADAR DETECTORS SPARK CONTROVERSY AT TRB MEETING

The discussions are reported that took place at the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (in January 1988) in the Session entitled "Radar Detectors and Highway Safety." A representative of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drew the connection between detectors and highway speeds, and between speeds and accident severity and frequency. The prodetector contention that devices only help drivers to regulate their speed and are not intended to aid in circumventing the law, was also addressed. A Texas University study that addressed the issue of whether detectors reduce voluntary compliance with speed laws is reported. A Federal Highway Administration study in Kentucky on the use of unmanned radar is also reported. The opinions of participants on these issues are presented.
