THE ROLE OF THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER IN RIGHT-OF-WAY ACQUISITION

This article states that the traffic engineer is in the best position to determine exactly how much right-of-way is needed. The direct inolvement in right-of-way acquisition activities is an extension of the historical involvement of traffic engineers in land use planning and real estate development. The responsibility for right-of-way acquisition requires that the city traffic engineer develop knowledge and skills in the areas of real estate law, title insurance, etc. It is described how in the City of Troy, Michigan, the traffic engineer is in charge of right-of-way acquisition. The City has developed guidelines for right-of-way acquisition that have led to an effective operation with long term benefits. The article gives some helpful guidelines for right-of-way acquisitions.
