THE EFFECTS OF DEREGULATION ON DOMESTIC PASSENGER AIRLILNE VARIABLE COSTS. STUDENT AWARD WINNING PAPERS. SUPPLEMENT. TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH FORUM. 1986 ANNUAL MEETING. TRF'86. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON. SEPTEMBER 22-24, 1986

This is the report of an examination of one aspect of airline deregulation, specifically, the effects on the short-run variable cost structure of the major domestic passenger airlines. A model of airline short-run variable costs is develped and the coefficients of this model are estimated, using cross-sectional time-series panels representing the regulated and deregulated industry. The model is used to investigate the nature of the changes in the variable cost function for this important segment of the industry both before and after deregulation and to compare these results as a means of understanding the changes that have taken place since deregulation.
