VERTICAL WICK DRAINS KEEP CONSTRUCTION ON SCHEDULE FOR TREATMENT FACILITY. CASE HISTORY
The use of vertical wick drains to save from 6 months to a year on the construction of a wastewater conveyance, treatment and outfall facility is described. The princple of soil stabilization by use of vertical wick drains is explained. The wick drains used on the project had a width of 4 inches and thickness of 0.12 inches. The drain consists of a polypropylene core, with maximum water flow capacity along grooves formed longitudinally on both sides of the core. The filter jacket, made of spunbonded polypropylene geotextile, is a key element of the prefabricated drain. Details of the fabric and stucture are summarized. The design of the vertical wick drain system required the determination of the Ch (coefficient of consolidation for horizontal or radial drainage) value. Other details of the installation are noted.
