HAWK NESTING DELAYED BRIDGE COMPLETION IN IOWA
This article describes how the need to protect the nest of a pair of red-shouldered hawks during two consecutive construction seasons, combinded with bad weather, slowed construction of a bridge which was finally completed and opened to traffic. A high truss, single-span bridge was to be replaced with a pretensioned, prestressed concrete beam bridge. The Iowa Deartment of Natural Resources was consulted early in the planning of the project. The red-shouldered hawk nest was built 40 feet up in a silver maple tree approximately 200 yards from the bridge.
